A 75-Second Pitch for the GOP Jobs Plan

Posted by staffwriter

Nowhere to be found in President Obama’s 54-minute speech this afternoon was a new idea, proposal, or plan to fix our economy.  Americans want better solutions, and Republicans have a real jobs plan to get our economy moving.   That was the message in a (brief) prebuttal video Speaker Boehner released this morning in which he appeared alongside many of the 30+ House-passed jobs bills that have been blocked by the Democratic-run Senate.  The House continues to do its job, and it’s well past time for President Obama and Senate Democrats to do theirs.  Here’s some coverage of the video, which was also highlighted on FOX and MSNBC : “House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is greeting President Obama’s visit to his home state Thursday with a video aimed at pressuring the president and Senate Democrats to support House-passed jobs legislation.  The Speaker’s office on Thursday morning released a video of Boehner standing next to a table covered with copies of bills passed by House Republicans that have stalled in the Democrat-controlled Senate.” ( The Hill , 6/14/12) “John Boehner prebuts President Obama’s jobs speech in new video. … But as the president flies to Ohio, House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) … suggests in a new video out this morning that the president could help revive the economy by pushing Senate Democrats to hold votes on GOP-sponsored legislation recently passed in the House. … The message Boehner delivers in his video … is a message that GOP lawmakers of both chambers continue to convey to constituents back home: We’ve held up our end of the bargain, Republicans argue, now it’s up to Obama and Senate Democrats to give final passage to the ideas we’ve put forth if the country has any hope of turning the economy around.” ( The Washington Post , 6/14/12) “With President Barack Obama set to take his message on the economy to John Boehner’s backyard, the Republican House Speaker landed a preemptive blow Thursday with a video blaming Senate Democrats for a congressional logjam that has stalled bills meant to create jobs.  In the video, the Ohio lawmaker points to documents covering his desk, identifying them as House-passed legislation now blocked by the Democratic-held Senate. … Boehner’s message aimed to turn the tables on Obama and Democrats…” ( Yahoo! News , 6/14/12) “Boehner Presses Obama, Senate Dems To Take Up House-Passed Jobs Bills.  House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) released a video Thursday increasing pressure on President Obama and Senate Democrats to take up a handful of House-passed bills said to create jobs.  ‘These aren’t big, controversial bills that no one has read.  They’re practical, common sense proposals to help small businesses to create jobs and build a stronger economy for all Americans,’ Boehner says in the video.  The video’s unveiling comes ahead of President Obama’s Thursday trip to Cleveland…” ( Talk Radio News Service , 6/14/12) “Counter-programming President Obama’s speech today is Ohio’s own John Boehner. The House Speaker … released a new web video this morning in which he appears on camera alongside many of the jobs bills waiting on a vote in the Senate.” ( ABC’s The Note , 6/14/12) “…the nation’s top elected Republican is out with a video ‘pre-butting’ the president’s remarks. … Rather, it highlights what House Republicans have already done so far in the 112th Congress – a stack of bills lying in the Senate that the GOP argues would help boost the economy.  In the video, Boehner is shown with copies of several of the 30-plus House-passed bills – a line that has been a rallying mantra for congressional Republicans this year.  In tandem, Boehner’s office released a blog post that lays out a sharper attack on Obama and what they view as a ‘pivot to nothing’ amid an economy still suffering a jobless rate above 8 percent.” ( POLITICO , 6/14/12) “Hours before President Obama delivers an economic address in Cleveland, House Speaker John A. Boehner is out with a prebuttal intended to spotlight GOP efforts in Congress to boost the economy and create jobs.  In the online video, Boehner stands at his desk in the speaker’s office before a table full of bills that have passed the Republican-led House but stalled in the Senate, where the Democratic majority has largely panned them.  The bills hew to the GOP’s small-government mantra: dismantle federal regulations, expand domestic energy production, repeal Obama’s healthcare law, revamp Medicare and cut domestic spending, among others.” ( Los Angeles Times , 6/14/12) “In the video, Boehner is seen standing by the desk in his ceremonial office, with dozens of bills laid out on it.  In it, the Ohio Republican slams Obama, arguing that “Friday’s unemployment report was a real punch in the gut” and that “Americans are once again left asking, ‘Where are the jobs?’” — one of Boehner’s favorite refrains since taking control of the House.” ( Roll Call , 6/14/12) “Prior to President Obama’s campaign event in Cleveland, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, this morning is releasing a new jobs video in which he will appear alongside some of the House-passed jobs bills waiting on a vote in the Democratic-led Senate.” ( National Journal , 6/14/12) “Speaker John A. Boehner is stepping up his critique of President Obama and his handling of the economy, attacking a speech that the president is slated to deliver Thursday hours before it was to be delivered.  In a YouTube video, Boehner, R-Ohio, reiterated his dismay over the failure of the president and Senate Democrats to back some 30 House-passed measures labeled by Republicans as “jobs bills.’” ( CQ , 6/14/12)
